A deal has been reached for RING and WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson to make his optional defense against Tavoris Cloud on Sept. 28 at Bell Centre in Montreal, with the winner to face Liverpool’s Tony Bellew, according to Stevenson’s promoter, Yvon Michel.
“Both fighters have signed and everything has been agreed upon,” said Michel, adding that a press conference will be held on Wednesday at Bell Centre at 11 a.m.
“We were waiting fo the final signatures from King and Cloud, and we got them during this weekend. So, now, everything is confirmed. Cloud-Stevenson will the main event on HBO. It will be on Sept. 28 from the Bell Centre.”
Stevenson (21-1, 17 knockouts) is coming off last month’s 76-second stoppage of former champion Chad Dawson, while Cloud (24-2, 19 KOs) was derailed as IBF beltholder by Bernard Hopkins in his last fight in March.
“I can adapt to any style. If he wants to come forward, I don’t have a problem with that,” said Stevenson, of Cloud, during an interview with RingTV.com.
“You saw Dawson come forward, and you saw what happened. If Tavoris Cloud comes forward, I won’t have any problems. If Tavoris Cloud wants to move, I won’t have any problems. I can adjust to any style.”
Terms were agreed upon, said Michel, for the victor of the Cloud-Stevenson fight to defend against Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KOs), who became the WBC’s mandatory challenger in May with a unanimous decision over Isaac Chilemba.
Cloud believes that Stevens is overlooking him.
“It’s a dangerous fight for [Stevenson.] It’s a dangerous fight for him, man. I’ve been reading and watching the tweets and stuff that they’re putting up on Twitter, and it don’t seem like he’s focused on me at all. I think that he’s thinking about three fights from now,” said Cloud, during an earlier interview with RingTV.com.
“He’s totally overlooking Tavoris Cloud, which I know, that’s not the smartest thing for him to do. But I’m definitely training and working my ass off for everything and I just got back from the gym, I’m in a 100-and-some degree heat index, man, so, you know? I’m going to be ready come back, man.”
