Jhonny Gonzalez shocked the boxing world when he stopped Abner Mares in the first round to reclaim the WBC featherweight title on Aug. 24. Fans want to see if the hard-punching veteran can do it again, according to a recent RingTV.com poll.
More than 47 percent of 5,000 votes chose Mares as the fighter they wanted to see Gonzalez face the most.
Undefeated prospect Gary Russell Jr. received the second highest percentage of votes with 31.5. Daniel Ponce de Leon, who scored a technical decision over Gonzlaez last September.
Undefeated contender Javier Fortuna and Japanese veteran Hozumi Hasegawa, who Gonzalez knocked out to win his first featherweight title, each received less than 4.5 percentage of the votes.
Mares has stated that he will push for an immediate rematch with Gonzalez.
