Molina dethrones Smith by split-dcision live round-by-round updates

LAS VEGAS — RingTV.com has live, round-by-round updates on this page for Saturday night’s bout during which Carlos Molina  dethroned  IBF junior middleweight titleholder Ishe Smith by split-decision on Showtime Pay Per View from the MGM Grand.

Molina (22-2, 6 KOs) and Smith (25-6, 11 knockouts) are part of a broadcast that includes Floyd Mayweather Jr. against Canelo Alvarez in the main event, and Danny Garcia facing Lucas Matthysse in the co-feature.

The Showtime broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT.

Judges:  Burt A. Clements  and Barry Druxman scored it 117-111, and, 116-112, both for Molina, and Adalaide Byrd had it for Smith, 116-112.

 

CARLOS MOLINA WINS BY SPLIT-DECISION!!!

RING TV.COM HAS SCORED THE FIGHT A DRAW, 114-114.

 

Molina entered the ring first, wearing the red, green and white colors of the Mexican flag and is loudly cheered during introductions. Smith is in the ring as well, wearing a black and red robe, and receives a smattering of boos.

 

Round 1:.Smith circles, and Molina stalks, taking aim with his jab at Smith’s body beneath the champ’s jab. Smith seems content to counter, but is short on his jab and left hook. Smith lands a right but takes a left to the body, as well as several rights and lefts on the ropes. Molina is warned by referee Jay Nady for hitting behind the head. Clearly the aggresor, Molina gets the edge and the round. Molina, 10-9.

Round 2:.The flow remains the same, Smith retreating and trying to counter with the jab and hook, and Molina targeting the midsection with his jab and the head with an overhand right. Molina lands to the body and head with a left and right. Smith lands a left hook after missing a right. Nice up-jab from Molina, who eludes a right from Smith. Solid overhand right by Molina. Good jab and right by Molina just prior to the bell. Molina, 10-9; Molina, 20-18.

Round 3:.More of the same to start the third, with Smith unable to get off and missing shots. Smith is warned for straying low,  and continues to backpeddle as action resumes. Molina’s jab and overhand right with aggression are controlling the pace. Molina’s head movement has Smith off his game, it appears, as Molina lands two left hooks prior to the bell. Molina, 10-9; Molina, 30-27.

Round 4:.Molina stepped up the pressure in the fourth, at one point, pinning Smith on the ropes and firing well to the body. Smith is trying to time the left hook, landing twice. Molina’s warned again for rabbit punching. Hard right to the temple by Molina. Good right and left from Smith. Molina’s warned for leading with his head. Too good lefts and a right from Smith. Molina lands a hard right and a left just prior to the bell. Smith, 10-9; Molina, 39-37.

 

Round 5:. Smith’s pumping the jab with slightly more accuracy early. Molina’s having more difficulty finding the mark. Solid body shot by Smith. Molina’s warned again for leading with his head. Good jab and follow-up right by Smith, who takes a left and a right. Molina retreats somewhat, troubled by the jab. Molina pounds twice to the body. Smith, 10-9; Molina, 48-47.

Round 6:. More of the same from Smith in the sixth, lobbing left hooks and right hands. Smith clubs with a right and clinches. Molina misses with a right when action resumes. Solid right to the body and left to the head by Smith. Body shot off the ropes by Smith, who is smothering Molna at times. Clash of heads hurts Smith for an instant. Smith closes well, behind his jab and right hand. Smith, 10-9; Even, 57-57.

Round 7:. Smith continues to stand his ground, fighting taller behind his jab. Molina has more trouble getting his hooks and looping punches in. Smith targets the body, and is warned for straying low. Smith covers well and lands a right behind theighefore taking one. Molina lands a success of blows, but is warned, yet again, for rabbit punching. Smith lands four left hooks with two rights in between to close the round. Smith, 10-9; Smith, 67-66.

Round 8:.Left hook early by Molina. A right and left by Molina, with a left answer from Smith. Solid right hand on the inside by Molina. Double-left hook by Molina. Right by Molina. Left hook and another left both by Molina. Lead left by Molina, who pounds the body during a clinch. Along the ropes, Molina hammers away with limited success. Molina, 10-9; Even, 76-76.

Round 9: Smith is wide with five early attempts. The fight is up for grabs. Smith doubles on the jab and delivers a third. Smith lands twice to the body with a right and once to the head with a left. Another left hook by Smith. Smiith is busier for a stretch. Molina lands a left, right and left all to the body. Double-left ook and right hand by Smith. Decent left hook by Molina. Hard right by Smith. Smith, 10-9; Smith, 86-85.

Round 10:. Smith lands three early lefts and a right. Three-punch combination by Smith, starting with a right. Clubbing overhand right by Smith. Right by Molina, left to the body by Smith. Left hook by Molina. Double-jab by Smith. Another Smith double-jab. Molina sneaks in a left hook. Molina’s not getting off as cleanly as he had earlier. Right to the body late by Molina, who gets the better of Smith on the ropes near rounds’ end. Smith, 10-9; Smith, 96-94.

Round 11:.Smith triples on the jab and fires a right hand. Molina’s still coming, but still is having trouble being effective. Molina takes a right. Molina lands a left and a right. Decent body shot by Smith. Good right hand by Smith. Solid left by Molina, who takes one himself. Good left by Smith, solid right by Molina. Molina closes stronger to steal the round, Molina, 10-9; Smith, 105-104.

Round 12:. Molina fires a right, left and right combination to start. Smith triples on the jab. They trade hard jabs. Short jab lands for Molina. Double-jab and hook for Molina, hook and rigth for Smith. Solid hook on the ropes by Molina, who pounds away. Double-hook to the body by Smith, right and left and right by Molina. Another three-punch combination by Molina, who smothers and pounds as the bell sounds. Molina, 10-9; Even 114-114.
