Bradley edges Marquez by split decision: live round-by-round updates

RingTV.com has live, round-by-round updates on this page for tonight’s welterweight clash during which WBO titleholder Tim Bradley retained his belt by split-decision over four-division titlewiner Juan Manuel Marquez at Thomas & Mack Center.

Bradley (31-0, 12 knockout) rose from a 12th-round knockdown for a unanimous decision in March over Ruslan Provodnikov in defense of the belt he won via split-decision last June over Manny Pacquiao, whom Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KOs) stopped in the sixth-round last December.

The HBO Pay Per View broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT.

Crowd is going nuts for Marquez, who enters first, led by his eldest son, Aldo. Bradley enters to “All I do is win,” and he’s pumped and jumping up and down. Crowd sees him, boos lustily.

During introductions, crowd’s already chanting, “Marquez,” and the noise is deafening, as are the corresponding boos for Bradley!!!!!

 

Round 1: Marquez’s body looks solid. Bradley paws the jab to the head and body. Short left hook by Marquez. Jab, jab to the head and body by Bradley. Partially landed left by Marquez, but Bradley lands a right, left and right. They trade lefts to the body. Bradley jabs twice to the head and takes a left. Bradley on the jab and distance, but Marquez is throwing with purpose. Bradley, 10-9.

Round 2: Double-jab by Bradley. They trade lefts to the body. Clinch, Bradley pounds the body and strays low. Jab is giving Bradley the edge, but Marquez is trying to lure him in. Bradley’s quickness makes Marquez miss. They trade lefts to the head, Bradley lands hard to the head with a right and moves away. Decent right by Marquez. Left-, right-left, from Marquez. At the bell, Bradley chases Marquez to the ropes and gets the edge in the exchange. Dangerous. Bradley, 10-9; Bradley, 20-18.

Round 3:  Bradley’s speed hhas been the difference in his getting off and getting away. Right to the body by Marquez, left to the head by Bradley. Disciplined jabbing and moving by Bradley, but he’s dropping his right when he throws his left. Double and triple jab by Bradley. Decent right from Marquez. Bradley’s staying away with the jab. Two, grazing right hands prior to the bell for Marquez and a few more punches may have stolen Marquez the round. Marquez, 10-9; Bradley, 29-28.

Round 4: Marquez is content to lay in wait for Bradley, who still is jabbing and trying to maintain distance. Grazing left by Marquez. Referee Robert Byrd takes a break to have Marquez remove some vaseline from his body. Bradley’s moving forward and still jabbing. Bradley lands two lefts to the body and wins an exchange. One-two by Bradley and a hook. They trade rights, and Bradley closes with a one-two. Bradley, 10-9; Bradley, 39-37.

Round 5:  Jab, jab by Bradley to open early. Left to the body by Bradley, left by Marquez. Jab, jab by Bradley, whose left is dangerously low. Nice left hook by Bradley. Good right by Bradley and another right that follows after. Marquez is a step slow. Bradley’s jabbing and maiintaining distance. Bradley gets off a nice, right-left, right combination and sticks out his tongue, making Marquez miss. Bradley, 10-9; Bradley, 49-46.

Round 6:.Bradley can win if he continues to do what he’s doing, jabbing, landing the right and moving away. Two jabs by Bradley and a hook from Marquez. Marquez continues to miss. Right by Marquez and a left uppercut by Marquez. Right by Bradley and a jab. Bradley’s keeping the fight in the middle of the ring. They trade right hands. Bradley’s jab and movement continue to win the day. Bradley thrusts both hands skyward as he returns to his corner. Bradley, 10-9; Bradley, 59-55.

Round 7: Early jab lands for Marquez, but Bradley’s back to moving. Hook lands for Marquez, but so do consecutive Bradley jabs. Left from Marquez, left from Bradley. Three jabs to one in favor of Bradley. Stiff jab from Bradley and decent lateral move to get away. Marquez misses with a big right hand. Marquez’s right eye appears to be swelling. Two good hooks by Marquez. Jab, jab, right, right all from Bradley. Bradley shakes his head as he returns to his corner, confident that he’s doing well. Bradley, 10-9; Bradley, 69-64.

Round 8:. Nice left by Marquez early, but Bradley backs him off with three jabs. Right by Bradley, double-jab from Marquez. Jab, jab, jab, right all from Bradley. Right gets through for Marquez. Solid body shot from Marquez. Bradley’s jab continues to get off. Nice left uppercut by Bradley, who takes a hook. One-two by Bradley, and then, a hard right by Bradley. Hands down, Bradley continues to win with the jab and wins an exchange prior to the bell. Bradley, 10-9; Bradley, 79-73.

Round 9: Bradley’s double-jab. Left hook by Bradley. Right hand and left hook by Marquez. Jab, jab and right by Bradley. Right and left to the body by Bradley. Right by Marquez. Left to the body by Marquez. Right and left both to the head by Marquez. Two rights to the body by Marquez. Double-left to the body by Bradley, who takes a left hook. Marquez misses with a big right. Round 10: Four unanswered jabs from Bradley, who moves away. Marquez left hook, right and left by Bradley to the body. Long right by Marquez. Bradley ends a four-punch combination with a head-swiveling right to Marquez’s jaw. Double-jab by Bradley, and good movement. Right and left to the head from Bradley. Round 11: Two jabs by Bradley, who missed an earlier right. Bradley continues to stick the jab, takes a right, and then nails a left and right to Marquez’s body. Marquez sneaks in a right during a clinch. Long right from Marquez. Nice lead left hook and two more jabs by Bradley. Bradley, 10-9; Bradley, 108-101.

Round 12:. Crowd’s chantng for Marquez, who can not seem to sustain his attack. Right and a left by Marquez. Bradley drops his hands. Right to the body by Marquez. Jab, jab by Bradley. Left hook for Marquez. Left hook by Bradley. Hard right for Marquez. Left to the body by Marquez. LEFT HOOK TO THE BODY NEARLY DROPS MARQUEZ. Bradley, 118-110.
