Magomed Abdusalamov placed in medically induced coma

Heavyweight prospect Magomed Abdusalamov was placed in medically induced coma early Sunday morning as the result of his brutal 10-round bout against Mike Perez on Saturday in New York City, according to BoxingScene.com.

Abdusalamov (18-1, 18 knockouts) lost a spirited, all-action unanimous decision to Perez in an HBO-televised co-feature to the Gennady Golovkin-Curtis Stevens middleweight title bout at the Theater inside Madison Sqaure Garden. The Russian southpaw sustained serious damage to his face and body during the fight. Abdusalamov reportedly suffered a broken nose and broken left hand, as well as a bad cut over his left eye, a swollen left cheek and a mouse under his right eye.

After the fight he was taken to Roosevelt Hospital where a brain scan detected a small blood clot. After Abdusalamov’s facial and hand injuries were attended to he began to complain of head pain and a sick feeling. The doctors placed him in a medically induced coma to reduce the possibility of serious complication stemming from the brain bleed.

RingTV.com is in the process of contacting Abdusalamov’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, who is currently en route to the WBC convention in Thailand, for comment and an update on the heavyweight’s condition. A follow-up report will be posted shortly.
