Unbeaten lightweight Yuriorkis Gamboa, a Cuban Olympic gold medalist, was arrested, charged with domestic violence and jailed on Thursday morning after an altercation with his wife, Dunia Francisco, who is the mother of two of the fighter’s four children, according to reports.
Gamboa, 31, is facing two counts of domestic violence battery, according to BoxingScene.com, which sourced records of the Miami-Dade County Corrections Inmate Profile System.
Gamboa posted a $4,500 bond on Thursday following a hearing and could be released on Friday, according to a report by ESPN.com.’
“There’s an allegation that was sufficient enough to get him arrested, but we’re not ready to make any statement yet,” said Tony Gonzalez, Gamboa’s attorney, according to ESPN.com.
“This is recent and unexpected. It’s two misdemeanor counts, not felony charges. We’re going to deal with [them]. I haven’t had a chance to talk to [Gamboa] yet in any detail. Only briefly when we were at the courthouse.
“Until we get a little further along and see what’s going on, we have no comment on it. We’ll deal with it. If there is any light at the end of the tunnel, it’s that we’re dealing with misdemeanor charges.
“I’m not downplaying misdemeanor charges. Anything like this is serious, but there’s two sides to every story.”
