Ward UD 12 Rodriguez live round-by-round updates

RingTV.com has a live round-by-round updates of tonight’s super middleweight non-title victory by bout RING and WBA champion Andre Ward over Edwin Rodriguez from the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.

Ward (27-0, 14 knockouts) and Rodriguez (24-1, 16 KOs) met in the main event and only fight on the HBO broadcast, which begins at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Ward’s title is not on the line due to Rodriguez’s missing weight at 170 pounds.

Round 1:  Fighters ready to go. Rodriguez’s body looks relatively dry compared to Ward’s.  Rodriguez runs across the ring and tries to get off a right hand. They clinch and they’re clubbing each other. Rodriguez trying to rough up Ward, pushing him around. Rodriguez grabbing and punching. Referee Jack Reiss has had to break them already four times. Ugly tactics. Ward delivers a right and a left to the body and a left hook followed by two more body shots by Ward. Solid power ab and follow up hook by Ward. Two left hooks off the clinch by Ward. A head-swiveling left hook by Ward. Ward proves he can take it. Ward, 10-9.

Round 2: Ward out-landed Rodriguez 13-9 in the first round. Two power jabs by Ward, who remains composed. Reiss stops to warn both fighters. Ward continues to pop the jab before the clinches. Ward’s finding room to land the left hook. Reiss warns both fighters to “relax.” Ward’s getting off first with the jab and the hooks. Head-swiveling left hook by Ward. Left hook by Rodriguez. Jab to the body by Ward and a clinch. Right to the body and a hook to the head by Ward prior to the bell. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 20-18.

 

Round 3: Ward opens with a hard jab. Harold Lederman has Ward up, 20-18. Another jab by Ward, who continues to land first. Left hook by Ward. Right hand and left hook by Ward. Three left hooks, one to the head by Ward. Two left hooks by Ward, the second harder than the first. Right and left to the body by Ward. Jab by Rodriguez, left to the body by Ward. Left and right to the head by Ward. Double-left hook by Ward. Jab by Ward. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 30-27.

 

Round 4: Ward out-landed Rodriguez, 28-7, in the third round. Lederman has it 30-27 for Ward. Reiss stops the fight because he “got hit.” He tells Rodriguez “I’m not going to allow this.” Reiss takes two points from both fighters and says he’s going to fine each of them. “If I have to disqualify you, nobody’s getting paid. Knock this s–t off.” Fight resumes. Ward’s getting the better, punctuated by a vicious right hand by Ward and a right to the body. Ward continues to get off first. Ward’s pounding the body and delivers a left to the head. Ward’s punishing Rodriguez in a corner of the ring. Left to the head by Ward prior to the bell. Ward, 8-7; Ward, 38-34.

 

Round 5: Lederman has it, 38-34 for Ward, who picks up where he left off. Ward’s landing with both hands inside, punctuated by a left hook to the chest. Rodriguez appears to be fading. Decent body shot by Rodriguez, whose right eye is beginning to swell. Left hook by Rodriguez. Power jab by Ward. Right, left, right by Ward after taking a couple of body shots. Jab and right hand by Ward. Left hook by Ward. Two lefts to the body by Rodriguez, who had a better round. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 48-43.

 

Round 6: Ward out-landed Rodriguez, 16-10, in round 5. Ward lands two wicked lefts to the body and a right and a left to the head. Four-punch combination by Ward, left-, right-, left-, right. Two more body shots punctuated with a left hook to the head all by Ward. Jab by Ward. Right, left, right to the body by Ward, ending with a jab. Lead right by Ward. Two jabs by Ward, who takes a right by Rodriguez. Left hook by Ward to end the round. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 58-52.

 

Round 7: Rodriguez’s trainer, Ronnie Shields, is frustrated. Ward out-landed Rodriguez, 26-4, in the sixth. Lederman has it, 58-52, for Ward.   Ward’s still doing what he’s been doing, jabbing, landing hooks and tagging the body with both hands. Two rights to the body by Rodriguez, who also lands a right hand low, undetected. Three-up jabs, a right, and a head-swiveling jab by Ward. More jabs and right hands by Ward. Hard left hook to the body by Ward. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 68-61.

Round 8: Lederman has it for Ward, 68-61. Three jabs by Ward to open the round. Left, right, left by Ward. Three hooks by Rodriguez, who takes a right, left, right to the head on the ropes from Ward. Three power jabs by Ward, who takes a hook to the head on the ropes. Right, jab, jab by Ward. Two jabs by Rodriguez, who takes two from Ward. Jab landed by Rodriguez. Another jab by Rodriguez. Right by Rodriguez and another right finds Ward prior to the bell. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 78-70.

 

Round 9: Lederman has it, 78-70, for Ward. Ward continues to get off first. Nice right to the body and jab by Ward. Three left uppercuts during a clinch by Ward. Hard left hook shakes Rodriguez after a right to the body. Double-jab by Ward. Right, followed by two left hooks from Ward. Ward’s on his toes, but then, jumps in with a head-popping hook, followed by a right. Head-popping jab and two lefts to the body by Ward before the bell. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 88-79.

 

Round 10: Ward out-landed Rodriguez, 25-5, in the ninth. Lederman has it, 88-79, for Ward. Ward’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, says, “you’re boxing a masterpiece.” Ward’s doing what’s been doing, pummeling Rodriguez off the power jab. Rodriguez can’t land anything substantial.  HUGE LEFT HOOK BY WARD. Ward fires three each in hard rights and lefts prior to the bell. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 98-89

Round 11: Lederman has it, 98-88, for Ward, who out-landed Rodriguez, 19-4, in the 10th. Ward’s continuing to dominate, but takes a couple of body shots. More power jabs, followed by right hands and left hooks from Ward. Three clubbing rights from Rodriguez during a clinch. Leaping left hook by Ward. Two left uppercuts by Ward. Ugly Left hook by Ward, jab by Rodriguez. Ward, 10-9; Ward, 108-97.

 

Round 12: More roughhousing causes an accidental butt and a horrific cut over Rodriguez’s left eye. Blood is pouring. Ward’s continuing to just beat up Rodriguez and beat him to the punch. Hard power jab by Ward. Another jard power jab catches Rodriguez coming in. Fight’s over. Ward, 10-9; 118-106.
