HBO to air Merchant’s interview with Mandela on Saturday

On Saturday night at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT, HBO will air Larry Merchant’s 2001 interview with Nelson Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid leader who died at the age of 95 on Thursday.

During the interview that took place in Mandela’s home in Mozambique on the eve of heavyweight Hasim Rahman’s knockout of Lennox Lewis, Mandela, an amateur boxer, demonstrated to Merchant his method of throwing a left hook.

Mandela was also a big fan of Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali, and felt that boxing, like many sports, broke down the barriers of race.

HBO’s broadcast of the interview will happen as part of its tripleheader featuring RING, WBA and WBO junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux against Joseph Agbeko, a junior middleweight bout between left-hander James Kirkland and unbeaten Glen Tapia, and three-time middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin opposite Lamar Russ.
