Erislandy Lara outclassed fellow junior middleweight contender Austin Trout to a lopsided unanimous decision victory on the Zab Judah-Paul Malignaggi undercard on Saturday in Brooklyn, N.Y. Lara dropped Trout in the 11th round.
Lara (19-1-2, 12 knockdowns), who won by scores of 118-109 and 117-111 (twice), outmaneuvered Trout and landed the cleaner punches throughout what was mainly an uneventful fight. The Cuban southpaw was never in any trouble. Trout, who tried to come forward and outwork Lara, was hurt badly by a left hand in the 11th round.
To his credit, Trout (26-2, 14 KOs) got up and survived to hear the final bell, but the New Mexico-based lefty has now lost two consuctive bouts. Trout lost a unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez in April.
Lara, who got up from two knockdowns to stop Alfredo Angulo in June, had the best year of his professional career.
