Shawn Porter upset the odds by outpointing Devon Alexander to win the IBF welterweight title on the Zab Judah-Paulie Malignaggi undercard on Saturday in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Porter (23-0-1, 14 knockouts), who won by scores of 115-113 and 116-112 (twice), started fast, outworking Alexander with combinations and in-and-out movement. The 26-year-old Ohio native repeatedly rocked the more experienced defending titleholder during the first half of the bout.
Alexander (25-2, 14 KOs), a battle-tested former 140-pound beltholder, worked his way into the fight in the middle rounds but still had trouble with Porter’s movement (feet, head and upper-body), size and combination punching.
