Talks are underway for WBO super middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham to make a defense of his belt against Paul Smith, their respective promoters, Kalle Sauerland and Eddie Hearn announced on Friday.
"We've been talking with Kalle for a while now and I hope to get this fight made in the next week or so," said Hearn of Matchroom Sport. "Paul is the leading available contender in the WBO and will bring plenty of support to Germany for the fight but more importantly, poses a live threat to Arthur."
Abraham (40-4, 28 knockouts), 34, is coming off a unanimous decision win over Nikola Sjekloca on May 3. Prior to Sjekloca, Abraham had fought last March for a split decision victory over rival Robert Stieglitz, earning the belt from the man who dethroned him by fourth-round TKO on March 23, 2013.
Smith (34-3, 19 KOs) has won three straight fights, two of them by knockout, since being dropped twice during a second-round stoppage loss to George Groves in November 2011. On Saturday, Smith, 31, meets David Sarabia (7-3-2, 2 KOs) at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.
"We are in talks with Eddie and will certainly be watching the show in Cardiff," said Sauerland. "Paul is number three in the WBO rankings and his style and Arthur's style would make for an explosive fight and a treat for the fans."
Smith joins his brother, Callum (10-0, 8 KOs) on the stacked bill in Wales as Callum defends his WBC International super middleweight title against Swansea’s Tobias Webb (14-1-1, 2 KOs).
Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KOs) makes his debut at cruiserweight against Shaun Corbin (17-4, 12 KOs) and featherweight Lee Selby (18-1, 7 KOs) faces Mexican Romulo Koasicha (21-3, 12 KOs) in a WBC title eliminator.
