American junior middleweight standout Julian Williams and unbeaten light heavyweight Eleider Alvarez scored victories on the Showtime Extreme-televised portion of the Adonis Stevenson-Andrzej Fonfara undercard on Saturday in Montreal. Williams stopped Michael Medina in eight rounds. Alvarez outpointed Alexander Johnson.
Williams (16-0-1, 10 knockouts), a 24-year-old boxer-puncher from Philadelphia, used superior technique and punch accuracy to out-land and outclass the game Medina to an impressive eighth-round stoppage. Williams was being pressed to the ropes midway through Round 8 when he shoulder shoved Medina off of him and in range of a clean right cross which put the fringe contender on the canvas. Medina, who hadn't fought since suffering a broken ankle in a first-round stoppage to Willie Nelson last March, got up but was clearly a beaten man and the fight was waved off at 1:59 of the round.
Medina (26-5-2, 19 KOs), a 26-year-old veteran from Modesto, Calif., did his best to attack Williams in spots and work the unbeaten prospect's body whenever he could but the Philly native proved to be the better infighter by blocking-and-countering expertly. Medina was able land single power shots when Williams' back was against the ropes but Williams dominated with his jab and lateral movement whenever the bout was contested from a distance.
Alvarez (15-0, 8 KOs), a 30-year-old Montreal-based Colombian, scored a fifth-round knockdown en route to an uneventful 10-round decision by unanimous scores of 97-92. Both light heavyweights were content to contest the bout from a distance and neither ever really committed to his offense, though Alvarez, who is rated by all four sanctioning organizations, was slightly more aggressive.
A grazing right to the temple caused Johnson (15-2, 6 KOs), a 32-year-old southpaw from Maryland, to turn his back and take a knee in Round 5, and a series of counter right crosses from Alvarez was enough to win the majority of rounds of the boring bout but not enough to win over fans watching the broadcast.
