Lem’s latest: Argenis Mendez gets second chance vs. Rances Barthelemy

The July 10 rematch between IBF junior lightweight titleholder Argenis Mendez and Rances Barthelemy will give Mendez "a second chance to correct a mistake," according to former undisputed heavyweight titleholder Mike Tyson, who will promote the return bout, entitled "Judgement Day," at The Convention Center in Miami.

The rematch became necessary after Mendez's controversial second-round knockout loss to Barthelemy last January in Minneapolis was overturned and ruled a "no contest" by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, restoring Mendez as titleholder.

"You don't always get a second chance to correct a mistake," said Tyson, who promotes Mendez. "Hopefully, he will take advantage of this opportunity."

Barthelemy (19-0, 12 knockouts) knocked out Mendez (21-2-1, 11 KOs) with punches illegally thrown after the bell ending the second round. Tyson appealed and, after the result was overturned, the IBF mandated a rematch. Tyson won the purse bid to promote Mendez-Barthelemy II, which will air on Fox Sports I.

Also on the card will be light heavyweight contender Humberto Savigne and welterweight Erickson Lubin, each against an opponent to be determined.

Junior middleweight Ed Paredes will face Alfonso Gomez on July 9 at The Joint at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino as the FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes' Golden Boy Live! series returns to Las Vegas, Golden Boy announced on Wednesday.

The clash between Paredes (35-3-1, 23 KOs) and Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KOs) will take place in advance of Golden Boy's July 12 matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara that will happen at The MGM Grand on Showtime Pay Per View.

Also on the Paredes-Gomez card, U.S. Olympian Joseph Diaz Jr. (10-0, 7 KOs), 21, and Diego De La Hoya (5-0, 4 KOs), 19, will both compete in junior featherweight bouts against opponents to be determined.

A lightweight fight between Art Hovhannisyan (17-1-2, 9 KOs) and Jonathan Maicelo (20-1, 12 KOs) will be the main event in a July 11 show at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Wash., on ESPN's Friday Night Fights, promoter Gary Shaw announced on Wednesday.

The co-feature will match middleweights Tureano Johnson (14-1, 10 KOs) and Mike Gavronski (14-0-1, 10 KOs).
