Underdog Chris Algieri’s inspirational effort in outworking Ruslan Provodnikov to earn the WBO 140-pound title on Saturday shook up THE RING’s junior welterweight rankings.
Junior middleweight: No. 5-rated Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 knockouts) beat down unrated Brian Rose stopping the British challenger in the seventh. No. 10-rated Andy Lee will be replaced in the ratings by Jermall Charlo (18-0, 14 KOs).
Junior welterweight: Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KOs) lost a split decision to unrated Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs). Although Provodnikov landed the heavier blows, Algieri out-worked him and out-boxed him in spots. Provodnikov admitted in his post-fight interview that Algieri’s sytle gives him problems. Dierry Jean (25-1, 17 KOs) is now fighting at 135 pounds and will be removed from the 140-pound ratings. The new ratings are:
Champion: Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs)
No. 1 – Lucas Matthysse (35-3, 3 KOs)
No. 2 – Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KOs).
No. 3 – Algieri
No. 4 – Provodnikov
No. 5 – Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs)
No. 6 – Jab Judah (42-9, 29 KOs)
No. 7 – Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KOs)
No. 8 – Jessie Vargas (24-0, 9 KOs)
No. 9 – Viktor Postol (26-0, 11 KOs)
No. 10 – Khabib Allakhverdiev (19-1, 9 KOs)
Lightweight: Dierry Jean resurfaced at 135 pounds. A discussion was had with the Ring Ratings Panel about the possibility of replacing Sharif Bogere with Jean at No. 10 in the 135-pound ratings, but no unanimous vote was determined so Bogere (24-1, 16 KOs) will remain No. 10 spot.
Junior bantamweight: Unrated McJoe Arroyo (14-0, 7 KOs) scored the biggest win of his career stopping former WBA flyweight titleholder, Hernan Marquez in the 11th round, scoring multiple knockdowns along the way. Arroyo will enter at No. 9, taking out Daiki Kameda (29-4, 18 KOs).
Flyweight: Since Marquez (37-5, 26 KOs) lost in a 115-pound title eliminator, he will be removed at flyweight. Milan Melindo (31-1, 12 KOs) will replace him at No. 10.
