Former IBF featherweight titleholder Billy Dib will rise into the junior lightweight division on July 2 for a bout against ex-titleholder Alberto Garza on a special edition of ESPN2's Friday Night Fights, his promoter, SMS Promotions announced on Friday.
Promoted by Curtis Jackson's (aka 50 Cent) company, Dib (36-3, 21 knockouts) was last in action for a ninth-round stoppage loss to IBF titleholder Evgeny Gradovich. The bout was a rematch of a split decision loss that dethroned Dib as beltholder in March 2013.
Between the losses to Gradovich, Dib won a majority decision over Mike Oliver in July and will look to rebound against Garza (26-7-1, 21 KOs) at the Grand Theater in Fox Tower at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.
"I have been making featherweight for the past 10 years and felt that I was losing some power due to slight struggles making weight. I feel stronger now and I am excited about attempting to win another world title in a different division. That's definitely my goal," said Dib via press release.
"I have done it before and know what it takes. I can't put a time frame on it. I will be patient and work hard to achieve another world title, God willing. I know Garza has the Mexican heart that you can never underestimate. He is very experienced, fought and won titles and is dangerous but I will be ready."
In the main event, junior lightweight Mark "Too Sharp" Davis of Cleveland faces Michael Farenas of the Philippines in an IBF title eliminator whose winner will become the mandatory challenger to that between titleholder Argenis Mendez and Rances Barthelemy, who meet on July 10.
