Boxing fans witnessed an exciting and interesting weekend, highlighted by Vasyl Lomachenko’s WBO featherweight-winning title victory over Gary Russell Jr., resulting in movement in THE RING’s divisional ratings.
Cruiserweight: Mateusz Masternak (32-2, 23 knockouts) lost a split decision to previously unrated Kayembre Kalenga (15-0, 14 KOs). Masternak was previously rated No. 9. He will be removed. Thabiso Mchunu (16-1, 11 KOs) will move up from No. 10 to No. 9 allowing for Kalenga to debut at No. 10.
Light heavyweight: No. 5-rated Chad Dawson returned and demolished unranked George Baldes by first-round KO. Dawson came in heavy for the fight but confirmed afterward that he’s still competing at 175 pounds. No changes.
Middleweight: No. 9-rated Martin Murray (28-1, 12 KOs) won a unanimous 12-round decision over unranked Max Bursak. No changes.
Welterweight: Devon Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs) returned to action outpointing Jesus Soto Karass. On the basis of this fight and his head-to head action with Shawn Porter, Alexander will replace Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) and enter the ratings at No. 10. No. 8-rated Robert Guerrero (32-2-1, 18 KOs) outpointed unranked but tough Yoshihiro Kamegai in a bout with several brutal rounds. No changes.
Featherweight: With a resume just short of 400 amateur fights and only three pro fights, Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO) outpointed Gary Russell Jr. for a majority decision win. Lomachenko will move up in the ratings from No. 10 to No. 6. The rest of the 126-pound rankings is as follows:
