Lem’s latest: Floyd Mayweather Jr. wins ‘Best Fighter’ ESPY

Pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. was named “The Best Fighter” for the sixth time at the 2014 ESPY Awards at The Nokia Theatre at LA Live in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

Mayweather (46-0, 26 knockouts) emerged victorious over a field comprised of Jon “Bones” Jones, Manny Pacquiao, Ronda Rousey and Andre Ward. Also nominated in the “Best Male Athlete” category along with winner  Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), Miguel Cabrera (Detroit Tigers), and Peyton Manning (Denver Broncos), Mayweather presented the award for “Best Game” to with Maria Sharapova, the latter of whom was named “Best Female Tennis Player.”

Mayweather earned a majority decision over Canelo Alvarez in September for THE RING, WBA and WBC 154-pound championships. In May, Mayweather earned a majority decision win over Marcos Maidana, adding the loser’s WBA welterweight belt to the RING and WBC titles he already owned.

Mayweather will be in Los Angeles on Thursday along with Maidana to close out a five-city promotional tour in advance of their Sept. 13 rematch at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The previous stops on the tour included New York and Washington, D.C., on Monday, and, Chicago and San Antonio on Tuesday.

 

KARIM MAYFIELD MEETS EMANUEL TAYLOR ON FRIDAY

Junior welterweights Karim Mayfield (18-1-1, 11 KOs) and Emanuel Taylor (17-2, 12 KOs) will clash on ESPN2′s “Friday Night Fights” from the Paramount Theater in Huntington, N.Y.

In the co-feature, welterweight Cletus Seldin (13-0, 10 KOs) meets Bayan Jargal (17-5-3, 10 KOs).

Promoted by Star Boxing, the event will also feature an interview with newly-crowned WBO 140-pound titleholder Chris Algieri, who will face WBO welterweight beltholder Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 22 in Macau, China.

Algieri is coming off last month’s split-decision over Ruslan Provodnikov that earned him his current belt, this, after having unanimously decisioned Taylor in February. Mayfield is looking to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Thomas Dulorme in March.
