Morales to return in December

Mexico's first four-division titleholder visited Golden Boy offices on Wednesday Newly-crowned four-division titlewinner Erik Morales, of Tijuana, Mex., will return to the ring in December, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told RingTV.com on Wednesday. The 34-year-old Morales (52-7, 36 KOs) scored Saturday night's 10th-round TKO over the previously unbeaten 21-year-old Pablo Cesar Cano (22-1-1, 17 KOs) of Mexico City to become the first Mexican fighter to win a crown in a fourth weight class. At the time of the stoppage, Morales led on the cards of judges Tim Miller and Ricardo Ocasiso, with Dave Moretti having it even at 95-95. Morales out-landed Cano, 214-207, overall, with an advantage of 100-82 in jabs. Cano landed more power punches, 119-114. "Erik Morales came by today. He was in the offices, and as a matter of fact, we discussed sort of what is next. He is considering fighting again in December," said Schaefer. "So, we we're going to have some further discussions with him. Most likely, the fight would be in Mexico. And I don't really have more information than that, but it is being discussed, and he would like to come back in December." Morales entered the match-up as one of five Mexican fighters to have earned title belts in three divisions, along with Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera and Fernando Montiel. Morales retired in August of 2007, after losing his fourth straight fight by unanimous decision to David Diaz in a failed bid to earn the WBC lightweight title. But since returning to the sport in March of last year, Morales has won four of five bouts, and was coming off of April's disputed majority decision loss to hard-hitting Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs), a fight that most ringsiders thought he had won. Morales is perhaps most recognized for his battles with Barrera (66-7, 43 KOs), of Mexico City, having lost twice in a trilogy that ranks among the greatest of all time. Morales is also the last man to defeat eight-division and current WBO welterweight titleholder Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs), doing so by out-pointing him in five months after falling to Barrera for the second time in March 2005.
