Marquez, Donaire eyed for Cowboys Stadium

Juan Manuel Marquez and Nonito Donaire are under consideration for separate bouts at Cowboys Stadium on July 14.

RING lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and RING No. 3-rated junior featherweight Nonito Donaire could be featured in separate bouts on July 14 at Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Top Rank Inc. CEO, Bob Arum, told The New York Daily News  on Thursday.

Marquez (53-6-1, 39 knockouts), of Mexico City, would defend his WBA/WBO belts against southpaw Filipino Mercito Gesta (24-0-1, 12 KOs), and Donaire (28-1, 18 KOs), his WBO title opposite Mexico's Cristian Mijares (44-6-2, 20 KOs).

Marquez has been targeting a clash with light-hitting junior welterweight Cesar Rene Cuenca (42-0, 1 KO), of Argentina, on April 21 in his native Mexico City, that would make him the second Mexican to earn a fourth belt over as many weight divisions.

Marquez's co-promoter, Fernando Beltran, told RingTV.com that Marquez-Cuenca could be for the WBO's junior welterweight belt currently held by Tim Bradley, should Bradley vacate it as a result of rising to challenge for Manny Pacquiao's WBO welterweight crown on June 9 in Las Vegas.

"Juan will definitely be fighting in Mexico," said Beltran. "And we're looking forward to fighting for the WBO title."

Marquez's last fight was a majority decision loss to Pacquiao in November, the third in a trilogy that includes a draw and another split-decision loss for Marquez.

In victory over Cuenca, Marquez still hopes to face the winner of Pacquiao-Bradley, with his preferance being a fourth bout with Pacquiao.

Donaire earned his third crown over as many weight divisions earlier this month, when he dethroned Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.  (21-2-1, 18 KOs) by split decision.
