Garcia-Khan II in November?
|
If they continue to win, Danny Garcia and Amir Khan could fight again in the fall.
"I’ll fight Danny Garcia anytime, anywhere," -- Amir Khan
In the ring following last Saturday's Showtime-televised 10th-round stoppage of Carlos Molina, former IBF and WBA junior welterweight titleholder Amir Khan signaled his intentions of avenging his previous loss to 140-pound rival Danny Garcia. In July, Khan (26-3, 18 knockouts) was knocked out in the fourth round by Garcia, who added Khan's WBA belt while also retaining the division's RING championship and WBC crown. A 26-year-old Olympic silver medalist from England, Khan suffered his second straight loss to Garcia, 24, this, after having lost last December's controversial split-decision to Lamont Peterson. The win over Molina was Khan's first under reigning Trainer of the Year Virgil Hunter, who also guides the career of RING, WBA, WBC and Showtime Super Six Champion Andre Ward, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist who was named Fighter of The Year for 2011.
"You have to think about the timing [of a rematch between Garcia and Khan.] Amir Khan is going to be fighting on either April 13, April 20 or April 27," said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer of Khan, a practicing Muslim of Pakistani decent who has signed a three-fight deal with the Showtime. "So I'm going to be working on that at the very beginning of the year to see. But, nothing is going to happen before that. The fact that is that he has to fight during one of those weekends, because, in May, he will get married, and then June and July is Ramadan. So, it has to be that he has to be back in that time frame." Meanwhile, Garcia (25-0, 16 KOs) is coming off October's fourth-round stoppage of Mexican four-division titlewinner Erik Morales in a rematch of his unanimous decision victory in March, and has lined up a Feb. 9 defense opposite ex-titleholder Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KOs) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. "Danny Garcia, we all know is going to be fighting on Feb. 9, so there's not going to be enough time for him to fight in April. I talked to Amir, and he wants the fight, and I've talked to Danny's team, and they want it. So the only problem is the dates," said Schaefer.
If all goes well, Schaefer believes Garcia-Khan II could happen during the late fall or early winter.
"These young champions, we need to keep them active, and I want Danny Garcia to fight three times next year. So I can see that he's probably going to fight again in June, and then, probably in November," said Schaefer.
