HBO will broadcast a tripleheader on Sept. 28 featuring former and current titleholders in three marquee divisions fighting in three different countries.
Abel Sanchez doesn’t think his middleweight Gennady Golovkin will ever get a shot at RING champ Sergio Martinez: “I think that they’ve made a comment about fighting Gennady Golovkin in about September of 2014. That’s like saying that he doesn’t want to fight him.”
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s decision to not to face Brian Vera after suffering a cut during sparring was apparently motivated in part by his father’s 1996 bout against Oscar De La Hoya, which he lost by fourth-round knockout after a sparring wound over his left eye opened early and bled profusely.
The upcoming bouts in October veaturing Juan Manuel Marquez versus Tim Bradley and Mike Alvarado against Ruslan Provodnikov, followed by the Manny Pacquiao-Brandon Rios fight in November, could lead to a round robin between the welterweights and 140 pounders.
Demetrius Andrade on fellow unbeaten 154-pound contender Vanes Martirosyan, who he fights on Sept. 7: “I was a 2008 Olympian and he made it in 2004. I will show him that if I was around in 2003 and 2004, he would not have made the team.”
Andre Ward on his relationship with promoter Dan Goossen: “If we don’t have an understanding, which it looks like we don’t right now, then we have a major problem.”
Promoter Bob Arum on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s fine reduction: “I’m not happy with it. I don’t think that there should have been any fine at all. I don’t think that there should be any penalty for smoking marijuana or using marijuana 10 days before a fight. I don’t think that’s a crime.”
