Abel Sanchez, the trainer of WBA middleweigiht beltholder Gennady Golovkin, gave RingTV.com’s Lem Satterfield his thoughts on the stacked middleweight division. A showdown between Golovkin and fellow puncher Curtis Stevens is close to being finalized for Nov. 2.
Abel Sanchez doesn’t think his middleweight Gennady Golovkin will ever get a shot at RING champ Sergio Martinez: “I think that they’ve made a comment about fighting Gennady Golovkin in about September of 2014. That’s like saying that he doesn’t want to fight him.”
Vitali Klitschko, who has been busy in politics and nursing a hand injury, has been given until March to make the mandatory defense of his WBC heavyweight title against Bermane Stiverne.
HBO’s Jim Lampley says there might be an interesting matchup to be made between RING junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and the winner of Saturday night’s bout between IBF beltholder Jhonathan Romero and Kiko Martinez.
RING junior welterweight champ Danny Garcia says of No. 1-rated Lucas Matthysse, who challenges him on Sept. 14: “If he’s not careful, he’s gonna get hurt.”
The anticipated Sept. 14 Showtime Pay Per View event co-headlined by Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez and Danny Garcia-Lucas Matthysse will be joined by a third title fight between Ishe Smith and Carlos Molina, as well as a welterweight bout matching Ashley Theophane against Pablo Cesar Cano.
WBO middleweight titleholder Peter Quillin: “I’m always out there to put on a solid performance for the fans…My fans are what are most important to me. They’re the ones who drive me to be where I’m at right now.”
Middleweight puncher Curtis Stevens: “People come because they love to see people get knocked out… I’m a one-punch knockout guy. I have that type of power… I can touch you just one time and it can be lights out.”
