In a close and very entertaining bout with a controversial result, Argentina’s Juan Carlos Reveco lost his WBA flyweight belt in Japan at the hands of local superstar Kazuto Ioka.
Despite being dropped twice in the seventh round, junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux slugged his way out of trouble and stopped Hisashi Amagasa in the 11th.
Former titleholders Kazuto Ioka and Ryo Miyazaki each posted wins on Tuesday to bounce back from the first losses of their careers.
In a battle of unbeaten titleholders, Amnat Ruenroeng retained his IBF flyweight title with a split-decision verdict over two-division titleholder Kazuto Ioka at the Bodymaker Colosseum in Ioka’s hometown of Osaka, Japan.
Although there was not a lot of action this past week, THE RING Ratings Panel made some significant changes to the junior lightweight rankings, which experienced a shake-up thanks to the advancement of beltholders Rances Barthelemy and Takashi Miura.
Japan’s best talents rang in the New Year on separate cards on opposite ends of the country. WBA junior lightweight titleholder Takashi Uchiyama scored a unanimous decision over Daiki Kaneko and WBC 130-pound titleholder Takashi Miura stopped Dante Jardon in the ninth round in Tokyo. WBA junior flyweight titleholder Kazuto Ioka outpointed Felix Alvarado in Osaka.
While much of the world will spend their New Year’s Eve watching the ball drop in Times Square or catching a local fireworks display, Japan continues a yearly tradition of having its best fighters defend their world titles in dueling events on opposite ends of the country.
There was not much action this past week but we do have some movement to report in THE RING’s division ratings, including slight changes to the 140- and 118-pound rankings.
